The young guns are on the rise

That was a successful start to the national bouldering season 2024! On March 9th, the first SAC Swiss Climbing Cup in bouldering took place at the Spinnerei Indoor in Ibach. A mix of volumes and holds of all stripes with predominantly dynamic and technical movements were put on the wall by Plastic Fantastic's international route building team. And who would have expected this end result? Probably very few!

For the women, it was a generational duel. The favorites Kümin and Yokoyama were followed by the youngsters Looser, Buckley, Walther and Couture. And look, who will be at the top of the podium at the end? It is Noé Looser, only 17 years old, who is already at the forefront of the elite.

She gave the audience the only top in the last 15 seconds of the competition on the very last boulder as the very last starter and thus secured her first ever victory in the elite. What an achievement that leaves you wanting more!

Behind Looser are Jennifer Buckley, who is a year younger, in second place and Andrea Kümin in third place, each with three tops and four zones. Only in the first slab boulder was Buckley three attempts faster than Kümin. In the remaining final boulders they climbed ex aequo.

Head to head race

For their male colleagues it was an even thinner race and again the youngest was at the top of the podium in the final. Like Looser, Romain Sabatier takes his first victory in the elite at just 18 years old, moving just one attempt ahead of Julien “Juli” Clémence, the reigning Swiss bouldering champion, for a zone classification. When it comes to competition, nothing comes for free. Sleep once and the competition has already moved away!

Like Sabatier and Clémence, Jonas Utelli got two tops and three zones, but wasted ten more attempts for the two top scores. He ends up in third place and once again proves himself as a lead specialist among the boulderers.

What do we take with us from Ibach? It is the young wild ones who rebel at the start of the season and achieve the first surprise victories. After the resignations of Natalie Bärtschi, Anne-Sophie Koller, Zoé Egli and Dimitri Vogt last year, some probably thought that the resulting gap would be difficult to fill. But that is not the case and the young talents show us a path to the future of Swiss climbing.

Finals in live stream

This future makes its next stop at the second SAC Swiss Climbing Cup in bouldering in the Boulder Arena Sursee on Saturday, March 23rd. The newly built bouldering hall with its spacious spectator area invites you to the next test of strength for the U18 and elite.

Will Looser and Sabatier land their next coups? Or will the older ones come back? We can expect another spectacle, because Sursee is just as strong as Ibach. Nils Favre, who had to sit out in Ibach due to illness, is back in the men's competition. Petra Klingler is missing again from the women's team.

Once again there will be a live stream for everyone who can't be there. It runs statically and without commentary from 16:00 p.m. to 17:45 p.m. to show the U18 final.

From 19:15 p.m. to 21:00 p.m. we can watch the elite in the final, accompanied by commentary from David Firnenburg. Admission is free for everyone who would like to watch the competition live on site.
