Voluntary recall: Mammut Barryvox 2 and Barryvox S2

Mammut is recalling the new Barryvox 2 and Barryvox S2 avalanche transceivers from the 2024/25 winter season. It has been determined that the functionality of the main switch may be impaired in some cases.

The possible malfunction is due to an assembly problem. As a result, the main switch of the affected devices may be misaligned under certain conditions. This may cause the device to accidentally switch from transmit mode to search mode under lateral pressure or even turn the device off completely. This defect may pose a safety risk to users and must be corrected.

After identifying this risk, we immediately checked 100% of our inventory. The inspection confirmed that only the models Barryvox 2 and  Barryvox S2 could be affected. The previous models Barryvox and Barryvox S are not affected.

Fortunately, we were able to determine the cause of the possible error and immediately initiated a damage limitation process to replace the affected devices in a timely manner.

Please return your Barryvox 2 or Barryvox S2 for inspection and replacement.

We have a solution for all affected devices. Therefore, we ask you:

  • Pack your Barryvox 2 or S2 and send it to Mammut (address on the return label) for inspection by following the customer service instructions. If you purchased a package with a shovel and probe, you only need to return the Barryvox device.
  • We will check the product and return it or send a replacement device within 7 working days of receiving your product. Alternatively, you can drop off your Barryvox 2 or S2 at your nearest Mammut store.
  • Repairing a defect is free of charge.

The defect poses a safety risk for users and is taken very seriously by Mammut.

Can I check my Barryvox 2 / Barryvox S2 myself?

It is our top priority to make sure your device is not affected by the malfunction. For this reason, our experts will quickly check your device and return it to you or provide you with a replacement. Please do not attempt to repair or check the device yourself.

Did an accident occur due to this assembly error?

This is a voluntary recall. We are not aware of any accidents that have been attributed to this possible defect.

Why was this fundamental error not discovered during the first quality controls? If a policy already existed, why was it not enforced or monitored?

We set the highest standards for the performance and safety of our products. The Mammut Barryvox 2 and S2 are complex and technical products that are assembled by our long-term partner in Switzerland. Unfortunately, a problem arose during assembly, which has now been fully resolved. We sincerely apologize for this oversight.

What are the consequences of this problem? How will Mammut prevent future cases?

Together with our Swiss partner, we have further strengthened our already thorough quality controls during and after assembly to ensure that something like this does not happen again. Mammut has long enjoyed a reputation as a safety brand in mountain sports. Our top priority is to maintain the trust placed in us and to exceed our customers' expectations.

Will Mammut continue to sell the Barryvox 2 and S2?

Yes, the Barryvox 2 and S2 are our top-of-the-line avalanche transceivers. We are proud of these innovative devices that set the standard for avalanche safety. We will of course continue to offer these products and take all necessary measures to proactively ensure maximum protection for our customers.
