Zurich wants the longest urban climbing route in the world

The Zürinordwand interest group has set itself a high goal: it would like to create the world's longest urban climbing routes at the Swissmill silo. The owner - the Coop Cooperative - doesn't want to change anything on the wall.

When asked by LACRUX, the press spokesman for the Coop Cooperative, Ramón Gander, replied: “As the building owner and operator, we are satisfied with the implementation. External use is not planned. ”Despite this response from the Coop Cooperative, the initiators Adrian Walther, Pascal Hendrickx and Robert Fischer want to pursue the idea, because no official discussions have yet taken place. The 118 meter high Swissmill tower would definitely be ideal for climbing routes, as no residents would be alarmed.

Friborg, Vienna and Berlin are doing it

Prototypes of the IG Zürinordwand are the places where you can already climb on urban buildings and buildings. The most famous example in Switzerland is the Pont de Pérolles outside the Röstigraben town of Friborg. other examples are the Flak Tower in Berlin and the Kegel in Vienna. Such projects are therefore possible, provided the owners play along.

Prominent mountain sports enthusiasts

There is great enthusiasm for the Zürinordwand project in the climbing scene. “Bringing climbing into the city - and not just in the hall, but on a high, free-standing tower - has style. The urban outdoor feeling is sure to be a special experience. In addition, the existing building will have an interesting second use, ”said climber Nina Caprez. The mountaineer Stephan Siegrist also supports the project: “This is an exciting project because it takes advantage of the peculiarities of a not entirely ordinary building to enable cool, extended use without great effort: climbing high above the roofs of the city. "
