Robert Renzler dies in a climbing accident

Robert Renzler, the well-known mountain guide, alpinist and long-time general secretary of the Austrian Alpine Association, died in a climbing accident last weekend. The 67-year-old fell more than 60 meters while abseiling down the Stafflachwand near Ausserschmirn.

The mountaineering community mourns Robert Renzler. The long-standing General Secretary of the Austrian Alpine Club (2002 to 2020), mountain and ski guide and well-known all-round alpinist had an accident on May 20th while abseiling down the Stafflachwand in the Ausserschmirn municipality.

In the course of his climbing career, Robert Renzler had completed countless difficult climbing tours on the great alpine walls and in Yosemite, undertaken successful expeditions in the Karakorum Mountains (e.g. Gasherbrum II without oxygen in alpine style or Masherbrum over the north face) and inspired many people with his passion for mountaineering and touched.

As the organizer of the first World Climbing Championships in Innsbruck, as President of the UIAA Mountaineering Commission and as General Secretary of the Alpine Club for many years, Robert Renzler had a decisive influence on climbing. In addition, the 67-year-old has been committed to nature conservation and the preservation of alpine landscapes throughout his life.
