8B at 14 years old: Bayes Wilder boulders L'Arche in the Rocklands

In 2021, ten-year-old Bayes Wilder became the youngest person in the world to climb a grade 8c+ route. Now the American is ticking off his first 8B boulder.

The first boulder at a new difficulty level is always something special – especially when you are only 14 years old. The US climber Bayes Wilder is now with L'Arche (8B) in the Rocklands For the first time, a project of this degree was successful.

«Surprisingly technical and complex»

Only at the beginning of the year Wilder He climbed his first 9a, Life of Villains in Hurrican Cave in Utah. At just 13 years old at the time, he was one of the youngest people ever to climb a 9th-grade French route.

During his recent family trip to the South African Rocklands, the young athlete from Colorado was also able to try out the area's many difficult boulder problems.

L'Arche, a full roof with "surprisingly technical and complex movements," was achieved by Wilder surprisingly quickly, as he himself says – in his second attempt on the second day.

Two 8A flashes and some 8A+ for Wilder

So far, Wilder has also flashed Awunda (8A) and Barracuda (8A) in the Rocklands, and ticked off several 8A+ climbs like Fragile Steps and Law and Order. He was also accompanied on the trip by Beckett Hsin, who also bouldered his first 14C in Colorado last year at the age of 8 – Daniel Woods' The Game. The record for the youngest 8C boulder ascent is currently 13 years old.

Despite young age: the pressure is there

Bayes Wilder belongs as well as Leo Cea, Veronika Chik or the siblings According to the and Alizee Blass to a new generation that is pushing the boundaries of bouldering and climbing at an extremely young age. Despite his young age, Wilder also feels the pressure to deliver increasingly difficult ascents. "My first 8A+ was more than three years ago. It's been tough not seeing any progress for so long."

Bouldering 8B was a big goal of mine – long before my first 8A+.

Even though the difficulty levels haven't increased for a while, Wilder says his climbing has improved enormously during this time. Especially for young athletes, it's often a matter of finding the right project for their physical abilities. Given his 14 years, however, it's foreseeable that Bayes Wilder will soon literally outgrow this problem.
